This collection of cat cards is my way of showing that there are many, many ways to understand the world around us. There are also many, many ways to share our understanding through our creative works, whether we write a song, make up a dance, write a play, draw or paint a picture, or compose a poem.

As I took pictures of the cat, it moved its head and sight line slightly to look at me. Drawing the portrait of the cat, I was also drawing a portrait of my moment in time. This was a moment of tedium and uncertainty, day after day. I never quite knew if I was tending to Mom's last day or the beginning of many more days stretching into an unknown future. The drawing is constructed in many layers, the paint is applied with a painting knife to give a more organic, dynamic edge, shape and line.

We are all growing and changing every single day. We are learning how to be part of families, communities, and humanity. At the same time we are learning to know and understand who we are, what we care about, what we are ready to fight for, or when we can accept what is.

Each day we wake up and remember who we are, where we are, and what we need to do - next steps.

We live with tedium and uncertainty. We live with imperfection. We also live with surprises, joy, connection and a sense of belonging.

We learn to love and be loved in return. Every single day.

I forgot to take a progress photo after I added the ground colour and before I added the warm reds to the subject and then continued to elaborate with white and black ink. I was really happy with the original idea, of a bonded pair sitting perched on a wire, each looking in different directions but sitting in close proximity to each other. That feeling of, "Give me space but don't go too far away." The delicate balance amongst autonomy, solitude and loneliness.  It is thinking about relationships, position, connection, confidence, empowerment, belonging, and self worth that is inspiring this exploration. It is also awareness of the feeling of foreboding that permeates each day. A Tough Night - 2023 11 23

  Last night I thought I would get some work done at my art desk after Mom went to bed. I sat down to drink a nice cup of tea and watch horse videos on Facebook to inspire my effort. It was a fitful night of restless sleep. Too many loose threads, unfinished edges, possible patterns. I have added layers of blue and red pencil crayon to continue building shape and character into the crows. At the same time their relationship is evolving in relation to each other and the context of the conditions of their emergence. Around 3 am I had finally started to drift off when I heard singing from Mom's room. I woke up again, trying to figure out if she was dreaming or awake. I hauled myself out of bed again to go check on her. Working on the drawing gives me a sense of purpose to these strange, constrained and unlimited days. Making my way as I make sense of my situation on this geographic location on earth, at this time in human evolution, in this moment of an ever expanding universe. Making my way from the quotidian tasks that keep us alive to the mystery of creative works of endless repetition that allow slight variations to show themselves in moments of surprise.
