Added another layer of blue / red mixes. Next will be a green series to apply local colour to the foliage of the trees - warm green in the front, cool green on the spruce tree. Leave the house, fence and railing warm. Leave the sky blue/grey.

Gripped by a moment of optimism and energy, I made a combined pencil drawing of blind contour and observed contour lines. My perception of proportion is almost dyslexic, so I need to work back and forth across the subject to pull in and out of the shapes to get something approximate of my observed subject. The pencil drawing sat for a few days while I waited to figure out what to do next. Yesterday I decided to try something with ink. I mixed in equal measure, black and raw umber ink. In five shot glasses I spooned one tablespoon of water for each. The first shot glass received one drop each of black and raw umber. The second shot glass received two drops, the third, three drops, to the fifth shot glass, which received five drops each of black and raw umber ink. Magic and Mark-making - 2025 03 20

  Pencil crayon, pen and ink, acrylic ink on paper, 6 1/2" x 5" Last night I decided to stay home and work on my drawing instead of going out to take part in an evening with the Vancouver Folk Song Society.  It was hard to make the choice, because both of these activities are my contribution to the antidote for authoritarianism and feel equally important.  I had a key pattern in progress and I was ready to put the third, final layer of lines, colour and washes. I was curious to see how it would turn out and that is where I put my energy. In his book, "Celtic art: The methods of construction", George Bain has a chapter on Key Patterns. I have added information from his book to give background about the meaning and significance of key pattern design. Some Chinese key patterns belong to periods prior to BC 1,000. Four pears on a windowsill - 2025 04 12

  Graphite, pencil crayon on mylar - 12" x 9" Last night I decided to stay in instead of going out to an open mic evening. I am recovering from burn out. I used up my energy on an artist date to the art supply store at midday with my good friends, Christine and Louise. I couldn't wait to try my new drawing materials. I was happy to stay home with the dog for the evening. Ellen Dissanayke describes how pre-contact human tribal societies show a common trait of calling themselves 'people' (human) and neighouring tribes (non tribe members) 'other' (non-human) (Dissanayake, 1995 p. 15). This construction of human identity seems self-evident and passes uncontested. Humans everywhere tend to consider themselves and their immediate kind to be the measure of all things.
